We Publish Public Safety Committee Chair / Councilwoman Suzie Price Response Following LBREPORT.com Report On No Public Safety Committee Meeting Re FY15 Budget's Public Safety Aspects

(Aug. 7, 2014, 9:50 p.m.) -- At 4:15 p.m. today (Aug. 7), Third district Councilwoman Suzie Price, named in July to chair the City Council's Public Safety Committee by Mayor Robert Garcia, emailed a response to LBREPORT.com [and to a third party we'll identify subsequently] regarding our report earlier today (Aug. 7) that she won't be holding a meeting of the Public Safety Committee she chairs on the Mayor recommended/management proposed FY15 budget's public safety aspects.

Dear Mr. Pearl and [a third party]:

I have had an opportunity to read your email and LBReport.com story on the issue of whether the Public Safety Committee will hold a meeting to discuss the proposed budget recommendations from the Mayor and City Manager. First, [to third party], I believe there has been some confusion, there will be public comment at the Budget hearing for public safety on Tuesday, the 12th. I have listed the specifics below. In terms of the public safety committee, however, there will be no budget hearing, but there will be a meeting where items impacting the budget will be discussed.

Based on my research it does not appear that City Council committees have ever held separate budget hearings to address the specific focus areas of that committee beyond the budget hearings that are scheduled with the full City Council and the Council's Budget Oversight Committee. There is no precedent for such a thing. I have, however, always intended to have several agenda items for the September Public Safety committee meeting, which directly address programs and public safety funding issues for the FY15 budget. We are in the process of creating the agenda and setting the date. If you have any recommendations on agenda items dealing with the budget, please let us know. I am more than happy to hear your suggestions and place any additional items on the agenda.

I would like to remind you that a public safety hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12th at 6 PM. The hearing is expected to be a complete and through overview of the budget recommendations being proposed by the Mayor and City Manager. The hearing will be before the entire City Council. Additionally, I invite both of you to attend the Budget Oversight Committee meeting, which will be held at 4 PM on Tuesday, August 12th. Both of these hearings are designed to provide the public with opportunities to give input on the impact of the proposed budget recommendations on various City services, including public safety.

Sincerely,

s/ Councilwoman Price
