Council Will Discuss Police, Fire, Disaster/Emer Comm Budgets @ 6:30 p.m. Today
(August 9, 2016, 6:55 a.m.) -- The City Concil is scheduled to discuss proposed FY17 Police, Fire and Disaster Peparedness & Emergency Communications budgets at 6:30 p.m. tonight during the evening's Council meeting.
After seeking voter approval in June for a sales tax increase labelled on the ballot and portrayed in a $600,000+ campaign to address police and fire issues as well as infrastructure, city management and Mayor Robert Garcia on Aug. 1 proposed a budget that would restore 8 of roughly 200 police officers eliminated since Sept. 2009, leave a number of fire stations without fire engines and leave a NLB fire station without its paramedic/rescue unit. A City Council majority can change what management and the Mayor have proposed. The deadline for enacting a FY17 budget with changes to what management and the Mayor have proposed is mid-September and is subject to a Mayoral veto that six Councilmembers can override.
