(UPDATE Aug. 11, 2018, updated 7:50 a.m.) -- As flashed with initial information on LBREPORT.com's front page Friday afternoon (Aug. 10), a wild scene unfolded inside LASD's Lakewood station (5130 Clark Ave., north of Del Amo) shortly before 1 p.m. when LASD says an arrestee (a man, 5'10" 260 lbs) allegedly punched and overpowered an LASD civilian employee (a woman, 4'11") who was taking his fingerprints.

The civilian employee (a "custody assistant") managed to press a panic button and alerted other station personnel as the arrestee allegedly dragged her into a nearby holding cell. The Watch Commander and armed deputies responded; they pepper-sprayed the suspect who didn't release the civilian employee and allegedly pointed the tazer at Deputies...who then shot him.

The civilian employee and suspect are taken to a nearby hospital; she suffered a broken nose; the suspect is expected to survive.

In an updated release this morning (Aug. 11), LASD states:

[LASD Aug. 11 updated release text]...Homicide detectives have learned, the suspect was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked and placed inside the station jail. He was waiting to be fingerprinted by the station’s Custody Assistant.

The Custody Assistant [civilian employee] brought the suspect out to be fingerprinted so he could be positively identified at the station. As the suspect was being fingerprinted, the suspect turned and punched the Custody Assistant in the face. The Custody Assistant falls down to the ground and while she is on the ground, the suspect takes possession of the Tazer that is attached to her hip.

The Custody Assistant manages to hit the panic button located inside the station jail, which immediately sets off an alarm and alerts the watch commander along with all station personnel to request immediate assistance.

The suspect grabs the Custody Assistant by the hair and drags her into a holding cell. The watch commander and deputy personnel respond to the holding cell where they see the suspect pointing the Tazer in their direction while holding down the Custody Assistant. Watch Commander directs deputies to grab their firearms and bring them inside the jail. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the incident but the suspect refused to comply. Deputies used pepper spray on the suspect but it did not stop the suspect from continuing his assault on the Custody Assistant.

Lakewood deputies bring their firearms into the station jail but the suspect closes and locks the holding cell door on them. Deputies manage to open the holding cell door using another set of jail keys.

After several commands to surrender, the suspect points the Tazer at them. Deputies fearing the suspect was going to deploy the Tazer at them and would not stop his assault on the Custody Assistant, fired at least one round at the suspect striking him in the upper torso area.

The Custody Assistant manages to crawl out of the holding cell. Deputies attempt to close the holding cell door but the suspect continues to resist the deputies by trying to keep the door open. A deputy manages to use the cuffing port door of the holding cell door and deploys his Tazer, which immediately incapacitates the suspect.

The Custody Assistant, a female adult was taken immediately to the local hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

The suspect, a male adult was also taken to a local hospital where he is listed as stable but in critical condition.

The investigation is on-going and there is no further information available...
