Long Beach Falls to 7th in State Population (Latest Update from CA Dept. of Finance)

(Dec. 11, 2014, 3:55 p.m.) -- The City of Long Beach's population grew by 0.5% but fell to 7th among CA's largest cities with a population of 470,292 as of Jan. 1, 2014 in the latest estimate of city, county and state population by CA's Dept. of Finance.

The agency says Lakewood now has a population of 81,224 (#99) and Signal Hill has 11,411 (#399). .

The City of L.A.'s population is now estimated at 3,904,657.

The agency updates its population estimates twice annually (an initial estimate issued in May for the most recent January 1, which is updated and finalized in December for the latest Jan.. In other words, the agency's figures above estimate populations as of Jan 1.

The agency's figures are used [agency text] used "by local areas to calculate their annual appropriations limit. The State Controller's Office uses Finance's estimates to update their population figures for distribution of state subventions to cities and counties, and to comply with various state codes. Additionally, estimates are used for research and planning purposes by federal, state, and local agencies, the academic community, and the private sector..."
