Dear Willard Families,
It is with great sadness that I share the news that a fifth grade student from Willard died on
Friday evening. As you may have already heard, the Long Beach Police Department is
investigating reports that the student may have been involved in a fight in the neighborhood after
school. The latest news release from the police is provided with this letter. Our hearts go out to
the family and friends of the student during this difficult time.
Our main focus throughout this week will be taking care of all of Willard’s students. In addition
to our own school counselor and school psychologist, we will have school district staff members
here throughout the week to work directly with students who demonstrate a need for support.
We deeply appreciate your support at this critical time. Please allow your children to talk to you
about what we are sharing with them at school Monday. We are providing basic factual
information and allowing students an opportunity to talk in their classrooms in a way that is
appropriate for their grade level.
There are many details related to this tragedy that are still under investigation and cannot be
addressed by the school staff or by me. As we receive additional information and direction from
the Long Beach Police Department, information may be shared with you in the days ahead. In
the meantime, please take the opportunity to review your family’s after-school procedures and to
reinforce to students that school remains one of the safest places to be.
If you are worried about your child or have questions about how to help your child, please come
directly to the school office. Mrs. Kubicek, our school counselor, or I would be glad to meet with
you and/or connect you with support that is available to your child.
Sincerely,
Mr. Maddox
Principal
