(Feb. 8, 2015, 6:15 p.m.) -- In a stunning development to a story reported earlier today (Feb. 8) on LBREPORT.com, LASD has issued the update (text below) below indicating that a woman it now suspects is the mother to a newborn girl found abandoned earlier today in the area of Lakewood Blvd/Hardwick St. returned to the scene of the investigation, said she saw a womam giving birth...and was observed to be bleeding herself.

She was taken to a hospital where LASD says the examining physician concluded she had recently given birth. The woman is now pending a psychiatric evaluation; LASD says it believes she is the mother of the child; DNA results are pending.

LASD says its investigation is ongoing and the facts will be presented to the D.A.'s office for prosecutorial review.

An important part of this story: the newborn was discovered by a bicyclist (not yet identified) who was looking for recycle items when he heard the newborn crying, stopped to render help, saw the abandoned baby wrapped in a blanket lying behind a planter on the grass with no guardian present...and immediately took the child to a nearby fire station where she was taken to the hospital.

[LASD release text] On February 8, 2015, Lakewood Station responded to a call of an abandoned newborn baby girl who was subsequently taken to Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. The newborn was discovered by a bicyclist who was looking for recycle items when he heard the newborn crying and stopped to render help. He saw the abandoned baby wrapped in a blanket lying behind a planter on the grass with no guardian present. He immediately took the newborn to a nearby fire station where she was taken to the hospital.

Special Victims Bureau (SVB) as well as the Crime Lab was notified and responded to scene. At the scene a 35 year-old female approached the deputies telling them she witnessed the mother giving birth and assisted the mother by helping cut the umbilical cord. This witness was subsequently taken to Lakewood station for further questioning. During the interview with SVB Detectives, they noticed that when she stood up from her seat there was blood on her chair.

The blood on the chair and her story of helping at the scene led the investigators to believe she may have been the suspected mother, although she denied giving birth. For her safety she was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital to be medically treated for her bleeding. At the hospital, the examining physician concluded she recently gave birth because the placenta and partial umbilical cord were still inside of her.

The female was admitted for treatment due to the recent delivery and is also pending a psychiatric evaluation.

Based on the above we believe the women is the mother of the child. The DNA results are pending.

The investigation is still on-going and the facts will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecutorial review.

Anyone with information is asked to call Special Victims Bureau detectives at (562) 946-8531. (Feb. 8, 2015, 9:25 a.m.) -- Someone abandoned a newborn child -- a girl believed to be only few hours old -- in the area of Lakewood Blvd./Hardwick Street [area at or near western edge of the Lakewood Center Mall.]

The L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. says a currently unidentified man, who happened to be passing by, heard noises from behind a wall, checked and found the newborn child and took her to a nearby fire station where L.A. County Fire paramedics treated her. As of this mid-morning, LASD says the child is in stable condition at LB Memorial Hospital.

LASD says it's investigating the child endangerment circumstances...and notes that what took place could have been averted, since CA has a "Safe Haven" law allowing a newborn may to be dropped off within the first 72 hours at designated sites, usually hospitals and fire stations, which will accept the newborn with no questions asked.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Dept sent the message below:

[LASD release text] Detectives in Lakewood are investigating the discovery of a newborn infant found abandoned this morning at approximately 6:00 am. An unidentified passerby heard noises coming from an area behind a wall near Hardwick Street and Lakewood Boulevard.

Thankfully, he checked further and discovered a baby girl, who appeared to be only a few hours old. He brought the infant to a nearby fire station, where Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics administered treatment to her. The baby girl is listed in stable condition at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

The Sheriff's Department would like to remind the public that California has a Safe Haven Law in place. A newborn may be dropped off at a designated "safe surrender site" within the first 72 hours. Designated sites, usually hospitals and fire stations, will accept the newborn with no questions asked. Unfortunately in this case, we are now investigating a child endangerment incident .

Although we are investigating a crime, we are concerned about the mother's health and well being. We urge her to seek follow up treatment from a qualified medical professional.

Detectives remain at the scene processing evidence. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at Lakewood Sheriff's Station at (562) 623-3500. Or if you wish to remain anonymous, call "LA Crime Stoppers" by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), or text the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637,) or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org...
