Gov. Brown To City Officials: "If We Don't [Cut] Redevelopment, What Else Do We Cut?" |
(Jan. 20, 2011) -- Addressing a gathering of the League of CA Cities, CA Governor Jerry Brown asked the municipal leaders rhetorically what they propose to cut to help preserve state funding for schools and other Sacramento funded programs. A number of cities -- including LB -- moved swiftly over the past week to stymie the Governor's budget proposal to maintain Sacramento's level of school funding in part by phasing out Redevelopment. As previously reported by LBReport.com, the LB City Council voted on Jan. 18 (on 24 hours "special meeting" notice given on MLK Day) to encumber or contractually obligate over $1 billion in Redevelopment funds in an effort to put them out of Sacramento's reach. LATimes.com has details on the Governor's words and the city officials' responses, click here. The League of CA is a privately run advocacy group which advances the interests of City Halls statewide. LB City Hall is a member of the group and uses taxpayer funds to pay dues and cover travel, lodging and meeting attendance expenses incurred by LB officials.
