Tues Dawn (Jan. 21) Attempted Theft of Car's Catalytic Converter Brings Sizable ELB PD Response

(Jan. 21, 2014) -- LBPD responded in force at dawn and shortly thereafter, including a K9 unit and helicopter, on Tuesday morning (Jan. 21) in the area of Harco St./Volk Ave. (east of Studebaker Rd., south of Heartwell Park) after a resident observed a male subject [no age immediately available] under his vehicle, attempting to steal his catalytic converter.
[Catalytic converters are frequent targets since they contain the precious metal platinum.] LBPD Public Information Officer Nancy Pratt says that at about 6:20 a.m., officers responded to a call regarding a grand theft in the 3800 block of Volk Avenue. Arriving officers arrived learned that a resident had observed a male subject under his vehicle attempting to steal his car's catalytic converter
PD PIO Pratt says the suspect fled the area on foot...and police set up a permiter and searched with the assistance of LBPD's helicopter ("Fox") and a K-9 unit. LBREPORT.com on-scene photo, approx. 7:45 a.m.) At roughly 7:40 a.m., students were arriving normally for the start of the school day at nearby Newcomb K-8 Academy (formerly Keller elementary) a block west and a block south.
