(Jan. 9, 2015) -- LBPD says it recently received a tip about a vehicle seen in the area of a July 4, 2014 NLB murder...and police hope that surveillance photos below will jog memories and lead to information that could help crack the case that detectives believe is related to another NLB murder a week earlier.

In a Jan. 9, 2015 release, LBPD says it's seeking the public's help with the investigation of a July 4, 2014 murder they say was gang-related in the 6500 block of Gardenia Ave. that took the life of Kayon Dafney. LBPD has also indicated that its detectives believe the July 4th murder is releated to a June 27, 2014 murder in the 5500 block of Dairy Ave. that took the life of Marcel Johns.

In its release, LBPD says a tip described a white 2-door convertible seen in the area of the 6500 block of Gardenia about the time Mr. Dafney was fatally shot on July 4.

LBPD released photos

[LBPD release text] Homicide Detectives recently received a tip describing a white 2-door convertible, which was seen in the area of the 6500 block of Gardenia around the time that the shooting [of Mr. Dafney] occurred. They reviewed several surveillance videos collected from the area on July 4th and were successful in locating two vehicles that match the description. Detectives are hopeful that video enhancement may provide additional details, and the vehicle description/photos will jog someone's memory and additional witnesses will come forward.

Tips have also led detectives to believe this murder and the June 27, 2014 murder of Marcel Johns are related. Johns sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene in the 5500 block of Dairy Avenue.

Anyone with information regarding either murder is urged to contact Long Beach Homicide Detectives Teryl Hubert, Scott Lasch, or Michael Hubbard at (562) 570-7244. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or text TIPLA plus your tip to 274637 (CRIMES), or visit www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
