(Feb. 1, 2016, 5:20 a.m.) -- SCE crews are restoring power to parts of LB battered by 20-30 mph winds (one ELB gust to 50 mph) on Sunday (Jan. 31.)
LBREPORT.com is aware (via residents) that all or parts of LB's Peninsula were without power for at least roughly 12 hours (SCE put the start time at 1:36 p.m.) and one resident [very reliable] says the outage affected the entire Peninsula and lasted from his experience for about 15 hours (from about 11 a.m. Jan. 31 to about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 1.) (LBREPORT.com knew the Peninsula was affected but didn't report this until power was restored.) We're told by a resident that power was restored to the area of PCH/LB Blvd. (90806 and 90813) in roughly the 11 p.m. or midnight hour [time approximate.] If you were within the LB areas affected, let us know roughly where you are (large cross streets) and about how long the outage lasted for you. (If you're still without power, let us know and we won't report it till you're back up.) In the 5 a.m. hour Feb. 1, SCE's website states: "Due to the severity of the weather related outages, we are unable to provide estimated restoration times for some of the affected areas...We are bringing in approximately 200 crews to identify and repair the damage caused by the rain and wind storms." As of 5:20 a.m., SCE's outage map was unavailable. LBREPORT.com covered the story in real time, including the Nat'l Weather Service High Wind Warning issued in the 2 a.m. hour Sunday. By the 8 p.m. hour Sunday, 12,170 SCE LB customers were without power. Since a "customer" is an SCE account, we unofficially estimate the number of LB residents impacted (since families usually have 2+ people) was probably over 25,000. SCE's wesbite indicated (8 p.m. hour Sunday) affected residents were in these zipcodes (numbers indicate SCE "customers" meaning metered accounts...so the number of people affected is likely higher.) 90803: 915 SCE also said an outage in 90740 (Seal Beach) affected 2,219 customers, which we roughly estimate (families with 2+ people) is probably more than 4,500 people. Seal Beach's population is roughly 24,000 people...so on that basis, we unofficially and roughly estimate that 18-20% or more of Seal Beach's population was affected. 90740 The Nat'l Weather Service monitor at LB Airport recorded mile-per-hour wind speeds in the teens, gusting into the 20s starting shortly before 10 a.m. building to steady winds in the 20s with gusts into the 30s in the 2 p.m. hour. The 50 mph gust was recorded at 2:29 p.m. a bit NE of the Airport at the LBCC ELB weather station.
