(July 4, 2013, and updated July 7, 5:20 a.m.) -- The "Great Los Altos 4th of July Bike Parade" -- a red, white and blue grassroots-created neighborhood event -- continued to grow this year. Led by a classic Ford Mustang, a cadre of bicycles, tricycles, scooters, strollers, wagons, parents, kidlets and barking dogs assembled on Abbeyfield Street just north of Atherton St. at 10:00 a.m.

The event, organized annually by Los Altos resident Simon Stone (below), has become a neighborhood tradition, attracting several hundred people (200-300 by our unofficial estimate.)

Particiants enjoyed a slow ride/walk/stroll through the neighborhood to Abbeyfield St. and Stearnlee Ave. Below, realtor Joe Sopo greets participants in the "pace car" driven by Kari Stone.

Arrivals were invited to sign in, leaving their names and contact information.

The event has taken place each year by our unofficial reckoning for roughly eight years. This year, Councilman Patrick O'Donnell's office provided organizational/logistical support and the Councilman offered welcoming remarks.

Los Altos resident David Alpern wore an official-looking vest and provided assistance.

John Watkins was present, sporting red, white and blue for the event and lent a hand getting barricades in order.

Atherton Corridor Neighborhood Ass'n founder/president Daryl Supernaw was present early in the event and emailed us photos also seen on this page.

Taco Beach owner Kevin Vance (photo below) was present...and told us that he's taken part in the event for a number of years. He operates Taco Beach (SW corner Bellflower Blvd. at Stearnlee Ave.) and supplied ice cream for the event.

The parade ended at Abbeyfield/Stearnlee at the home of Jeri Carter who created a balloon bridge, decorated tables and offered her front yard for the occasion.

14 boxes of doughnuts materialized and area realtor Michele K (photo below) says: "I think Jeri and I donated just about everything except for three tubs of ice cream from Taco Beach and someone threw some water bottles in the ice." The doughnuts disappeared quickly, supporting a crowd estimate of 200+...and the ice cream followed.
