LBREPORT.com's Questions, Inaugural Committee Lead-Person Doug Otto's Responses, re Inaugural Events

(July 10, 2014, 11:25 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com had a few questions about what LB elected officials are now describing as "inaugural" events. Previous Mayors and other electeds simply took a ceremonial oath in the Council Chamber, snapped a few photos, said a few words and got to work.

We emailed a few questions to Mayor-elect Robert Garcia's press aide, Kathy Parsons [who during the campaign served as press contact for Doug Otto's Mayoral campaign.] [Mr. Otto didn't endorse either candidate in the June 2014 Mayoral runoff.]

Ms. Parsons forwarded our inquiry to Mr .Otto [whom Mayor-elect Garcia chose to chair his "transition team"] and Ms. Parsons forwarded Mr. Otto's responses to us. We appreciate the responses to our questions and publish them in full below.

[Scroll down for further]

Q 1. Who are the members of the "Inaugural Committee" (full list, please.)

A 1: Doug Otto
Laura Gresham
Freda Otto
Steve Goodling
Brian Bennett
Kathy Parsons

Q 2.What's your role in the Inaugural Committee?
A 2: As Chair of Mayor-elect Robert Garcia's Transition Team, I am the lead person on the Inaugural Committee.

Q 3: Is the Inaugural Committee the same as, or different from, the "Transition Team?"
A 3: They are different. The Team is working with the Mayor-Elect on long range policy goals. The Committee's role is to plan Inaugural Events.

Q 4. Has the Inaugural Committee raised funds for the Inaugural events, if so how much and from whom?
A 4: Like many other non-profits seeking to raise funds, Children Today formed a committee to put on a fundraising event. Three members of the Inaugural Committee were on the Children Today's fundraising team. Following the event, all donations and expenses will be calculated by Children Today.

Q 5: Is the Inaugural Committee paying the full cost that would otherwise be incurred by taxpayers for renting the Terrace Theater for a 4:00 p.m. July 15 Special Council meeting?
A 5: The public interested in attending the Swearing-In Ceremony for the newly elected City officials, could not be accommodated in the Council Chambers at City Hall, and so it was necessary to move the Swearing-In Ceremony to a larger venue. Under the City's contract with SMG, the City is entitled to a number of free City use days at the Terrace Theater each year. July 15 will count as one of those days. As the event is a public City Council meeting, the labor costs for the Swearing-In Ceremony at the Terrace Theater are being covered by the City.

Q 6: Is this sum included within, or separate from, amounts being spent to rent the Arena for an Inaugural Gala following the Council meeting?
A 6: This is separate.

Q 7: With what City of Long Beach offices have the Inaugural Gala and Special Council meeting been coordinated?
A 7: All City Council offices, the City Attorney's Office,.and the City Manager's Office
