(July 6, 2014, 5:30 a.m.) -- LBPD has released data indicating that between 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on July 4th, LBPD's communications center received 452 firework related calls -- a rate averaging almost two per minute: For the entire July 4th 24-hour period, LBPD received 537 firework related calls (compared to 561 in 2013; 498 in 2012 and 439 in 2011.

LBPD issued 32 citations for illegal fireworks citywide, and confiscated 271 items citywide. Three of the firworks citations, and 36 of the confiscated items, were within an area south of Ocean Blvd, along the coastline, from Queensway Bridge to the Peninsula/Alamitos Bay, as well as Bixby Park.

Long Beach is among CA cities prohibiting the personal use, possession and sale of all fireworks but is adjacent to or near a number of cities that allow state-approved "safe and sane" fireworks (certain sparklers, spinners, whistlers and the like.)

LBREPORT.com saw and heard multiple aerial fireworks (not "safe and sane" items) above ELB neighborhoods on July 4th.

As separately reported by LBREPORT.com, LBPD's Arson Unit responded to a July 4th incident involving an intoxicated adult who was injured when he allegedly ignited then held onto a firework as it exploded. His injury required the amputation of his thumb and he was hospitalized.

As LBREPORT.com has separately reported, within a less than four hour period on the afternoon of July 4th, LBPD also responded to four shootings: three in NLB (includes one murder) plus one in Central LB. LBREPORT.com coverage, click here.
