(July 27, 2015) -- Carl Kemp -- who handled government affairs for Long Beach City Hall under City Manager Jim Hankla, then took on the task of handling Community Relations/Government Affairs for the Port of Long Beach, and went on to own and operate a firm specializing in government affairs for a number of clients, has been named Senior Legislative Public Affairs Specialist to Federal Maritime Commission chairman Mario Cordero.

On his Facebook page tonight (July 27), Mr. Kemp writes:

I am honored to join the team of the Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, Mario Cordero, the ONLY presidential appointee from the City of Long Beach. As Senior Legislative Public Affairs Specialist (long title), I will be assisting Chairman Cordero with every aspect of his mission to foster a fair, efficient and reliable international ocean transportation system, and to protect the public from unfair and deceptive practices.

What is the Federal Maritime Commission you ask? The Federal Maritime Commission is the independent federal agency responsible for regulating the U.S. international ocean transportation system for the benefit of U.S. exporters, importers, and you, the U.S. consumer.

It is indeed a privilege to work with Chairman Cordero, whom I first met while he was being a good father to his daughter, Celine, at CSULB. As a Harbor Commissioner, he led the world in the concept of environmental excellence, and not only coined the term "Green Port", but made it the new operating system for the Port of Long Beach (and changed the way the world does business).

Words cannot express how proud I am to be joining the historic Administration of President Barack Obama. I join my brother Raymond-Kim Kemp (Inspector General of the Navy), as the second Kemp to work under the President (he has served a few!)

I will do my best to make my family, friends, and Long Beach proud.

Mr. Kemp, who was chosen for the position by FMC chair Cordero, holds a certificate in leadership from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and earned Master of Public Administration and B.A. (Liberal Arts) degrees from CUSLB where he served two terms as its student body president.
