(July 12, 2017, 8:52 a.m.) -- As previously flashed on LBREPORT.com's front page, Mayor Robert Garcia abruptly removed from July 11 City Council consideration the name of the person he'd advanced for Council voted approval to City Hall's "Airport Advisory Commission."
The action came after Mayor Garcia concealed the name of his desired appointee until publication at late afternoon Friday July 7 of the Council's updated agenda. A number of Airport-impacted residents (including retired 8th dist. Councilwoman Rae Gabelich and Cal Hts. resident Glennis Dolce) spotted it over the weekend, did some internet research and communicated their opposition to Councilmembers and the Mayor on Monday morning. By the afternoon of Monday July 10, Garcia's office informed Ms. Dolce that the item had been removed from July 11 Council consideration. At the opening of the July 11 Council meeting, Mayor Garcia said simply that the item had been withdrawn...and said nothing further about it. [Scroll down for further.] |
Mayor Garcia initially agendized the item without disclosing that his appointment was for the Airport Advisory Commission or who it was; the agenda title indicated a Mayor Garcia's agendizing memo stated: "In addition to serving in various City roles such as a commissioner on the Planning Commission for the City of Pacifica [SF Bay Area], Evelyne has been an active leader in her community [didn't state where] and an engaged member of numerous honor societies and associations [didn't provide details.]
Mayor Garcia's agendizing memo didn't mention that Ms. Angeles' spouse is Eduardo Angeles, who served as the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Associate Administrator for Airports (appointed in mid-2014 during the Obama administration) and is today a senior attorney for Los Angeles World Airports, which governs LAX and Van Nuys Airports. A May 2014 L.A. Times story on Mr. Angeles' FAA appointment indicated that from 2002 to 2006, he oversaw legal matters for Los Angeles International Airport, Ontario International Airport, Van Nuys Airport and Palmdale Regional Airport...and from 1991 to 2002, worked for the San Francisco city attorney's office, where he was a trial attorney and handled legal matters for San Francisco International Airport. The LATimes story indicated that as of 2014, Mr. Angeles was a Pasadena resident. An independent internet check by LBREPORT.com indicated "EMA Consultants" (presumably stands for Evelyn M. Angeles) at one point had a Pasadena address. An internet visible page under the City of Los Angeles' Bureau of Contract Administration indicated that as of December 2015, "EMA Consultants" had a Pasadena telephone area code but listed an address in the 90807 Long Beach zip code. Mayor Garcia's agendized memo didn't indicate for how long Ms. Angeles has been a Long Beach resident but a subsequent PressTelegram story reported that she and her husband had purchased a home in Long Beach in November 2016.
Webpages for "EMA Consultants," which were previously online according to third parties, had been taken down by the time we searched for them at predawn Tuesday.
