(July 17, 2017, 5:50 a.m.) -- Residents of a West Long Beach neighborhood (Harbor Ave. north of PCH, 1st Council district) reported (more) fireworks, but it was gunfire...and LBPD found about five gun casings in the vicinity of an large group of family/friends who were outside for an early evening gathering on Sunday July 16.
No one was hit, and LBPD says it's not immediately clear if the gunfire targeted people attending the event. LBPD overnight Watch Commander Lt. John Kanaley tells LBREPORT.com that at about 8:00 p.m. on July 16, officers responded to an initial call of fireworks but arrived to find shell casings -- about five shots fired -- in the area north of PCH on Harbor Ave. Lt. Kanaley says it's not immediately clear if any person(s) was/were specifically targeted or if the people attending the event just happened to be outside when someone somewhere opened fire.
