(July 9, 2018) -- A U.S. soldier -- whose hometown was Long Beach -- has been killed in Afghanistan.

In a brief July 8 statement, the Dept. of Defense announced (July 8) that Corporal Joseph Maciel of South Gate, died July 7, 2018 in Tarin Kowt District, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan "from wounds sustained during an apparent insider attack." The DoD statement says "the incident is under investigation."

Corporal Maciel was assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia. Task Force 1-28 Infantry is currently deployed in support of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade. On his Facebook page, Corporal Maciel says he's "from Long Beach, California" and his "about" page lists Long Beach as his hometown.

A release from the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield said Maciel served in the Army for two years, Fort Benning was his first assignment...and he served in Afghanistan since February 2018. He's survived by his father and mother.

"Insider attacks" refer to attacks on coalition troops by members of Afghan security forces or others wearing Afghan uniforms. A Taliban statement said a member of the Afghan security forces opened fire on U.S. troops, killing four people and injuring several others. A little over a year ago, three U.S. soldiers died and another was injured when an Afghan National Army soldier opened fired on a unit in Nangarhar Province.

LBREPORT.com will have further details as we learn them...and we express our deepest condolences to Corporal Maciel's family and friends.
