Three Candidates Lining Up To Vie For Long Beach School Board Seat Now Held By Mary Stanton

(June 14, 2013) -- Three candidates are lining up to vie for the Long Beach School Board seat currently held by Mary Stanton in the 2014 election cycle.

  • Jeff Price has a campaign website and a Facebook campaign page up. His website lists endorsents including (titles for identification only) Vice Mayor Robert Garcia, Councilmembers Suja Lowenthal and Gerrie Schipske; former Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga; LBUSD Board of Trustees President Robert Uranga and LBCC Trustee Mark Bowen. His website has this self-description.

  • Megan Kerr also has a website up, listing endorsements by grassroots parents and school advocates (including those active at Hughes Middle School). It also includes this self-description.

  • And as Dave Wielenga has reported at GreaterLongBeach.com, Uduak Ntuk has formed a recipient committee enabling him to collect money for the race. (No campaign website or Facebook campaign page that we could find for now.)

The LBUSD Board seat represented for many years by Ms. Stanton is a "north of 405" district basically encompassing Bixby Knolls, Cal Hts and NLB.

Also up in the 2014 election cycle are School Board seats currently represented by John McGinnis (downtown and southern-central LB) and Dianne Craighead (basically eastern half of LB north of 405 and some areas a bit beyond). Further on races in those districts as they develop.

A majority of the five member LBUSD School Board approves spending (school programs and budget cuts) and sets policies for schools in Long Beach, Signal Hill, Avalon, parts of Lakewood and beyond.
