Rooftop Area Fire @ Apt. Bldg, 100 block Falcon, Spread After Nearby Tree Caught Fire...For Reason(s) Not Currently Determined

(June 28, 2014, updated 9:46 p.m.) -- As reported on our front page earlier today (Sat. June 28), heavy smoke and fire visible from the rooftop area of an apartment building in the 100 block of Falcon Ave. brought a large LBFD response, at one point triggering a second alarm. LBFD Public Information Officer / Firefighter Will Nash tells LBREPORT.com that it was a fire in a tree that communicated to the adjacent building.:

[LBFD PIO Nash info] The fire caused significant damage to the roof and penthouse. In the initial stages, the fire severely threatened the adjacent apartment complex. Additional resources were requested and assisted in extinguishing the fire which held it to the involved structure.

4 Engine Companies, 2 Truck Companies, 2 Paramedic Rescues, one Search and Rescue Task Force (USAR) and 2 Battalion Chiefs operated at the fire. LBPD, LB Gas, LB Public Works and Edison assisted as well.

2 residents of the affected unit were displaced but did not require Red Cross assistance. No Firefighters or civilians were injured during the incident.

The fire broke out at about 5:30 p.m...and firefighters had it knocked down before 6:00 p.m.

So...what caused a tree next to an occupied apartment building to catch fire? Was it fireworks? Was it something else? LBFD PIO Nash says he'll check further for us and provide information as available [which we'll add here.]

Photos below show the aftermath at about 6:20 p.m...with firefighters on the roof near what looked like a charred area.

PIO Nash says the second alarm was called due the large amount of smoke and some fire visible but it turned out that a full second alarm response wasn't needed. Witnesses in the neighborhood told LBREPORT.com that they saw a LOT of smoke. One woman who said she's a resident of the building told LBREPORT.com that she didn't smell smoke and was surprised to hear a knock on the door...and find a firefighter telling her to exit the building immediately...which she did. She says firefighters appeared to douse the blaze quickly.
