(May 13, 2010, 5 p.m. update reflecting continuing coverage) -- At 4 p.m., Willow St. remained closed in and around Woodruff Ave. in the wake of a CHP officer-involved shooting this morning on the 405 at the Woodruff Ave. offramp in the wake of a CHP pursuit following an OC bank robbery.

LBPD successfully apprehended one of the suspects hiding in freeway bushes adjacent to the Woodruff Ave. offramp shortly before 2 p.m. through the creative use of tear gas.

At about 1:50 p.m., LBPD set off a tear gas round in the brush area at the Woodruff Ave. offramp...where a suspect was believed hiding. Residents of the area were advised by loudspeaker to remain inside their homes; officers were advised to put on gas masks...and the gas was set off.

Shortly thereafter, a person emerged from the bushes...and was taken into custody at about 2 p.m. (a scene captured by multiple L.A. TV news helicopters). A grass fire in the landscaped shrubbery was ignited by the tear gas round and quickly extinguished by waiting LBFD units. LBReport.com community correspondent Daryl Supernaw, who was on-scene for much of the day and provided many of the news photos on this page, says:

"Tear gas ignited burn area on north side of the Woodruff offramp from the 405. This is just south of where McNab deadends into Woodruff. LBPD was still using a dog [K9 unit] on Gondar in this neighborhood when the took the shots below...and the burn area was still smoldering (visible smoke) at 4:00 p.m.

LBUSD says six schools in the area were locked down as a precaution from about noon [we've heard the lockdown began in the 11 a.m hour at some schools] until 12:35 p.m. (Millikan, Emerson, Stanford, Prisk, Cubberley and Burcham). Dismissals occurred at the regular time (although some roads were blocked due to continuing police investigations).

Area residents heard a deafening din from law enforcement helicopters and TV news units for several hours.

LBPD transmitted reverse 911 messages to some area homes -- including some as far away as Bellflower/Wardlow), advising residents to remain indoors with their doors locked...and to call 911 if they spotted any suspicious activity.

Shortly after 12 noon, LBReport.com provided an audio update on events from CHP spokesperson Denise Quesada. (For that initial audio, click here.

For several hours, the 405 freeway was closed in both directions (northbound at 405 closed at 605, traffic diverted onto 605; and the southbound 405 closed at Bellflower).
