(May 25, 2014) -- In a candid communication directed to the public at large (and not simply media outlets), LBPD today (May 25) sent a mass emailed advisory (via Nixle) stating that on Saturday night May 24 and into the early hours of May 25, calls for service were backlogged due to multiple violent crime incidents requiring a significant deployment of LBPD resources.

Below is LBPD's email text

[LBPD text] On the evening of May 24th and into the early hours of May 25th, 2014, the Long Beach Police Department responded to multiple violent crime incidents. These incidents required a significant deployment of department resources and as a result response to calls for service were delayed. As soon as these violent crime incidents were handled, resources were allocated to handle the backlog of calls for service. The Long Beach Police Department would like to thank the public for their cooperation on this busy night of activity.

As LBREPORT.com reported on Saturday night and into Sunday, at 9:45 p.m. on May 24, LBPD responded to a stabbing in the 2400 block of Chestnut Ave. which led to a pursuit into NLB and turned into a suspect/SWAT situation in the area of Locust Ave./53rd St. LBREPORT.com received calls from residents who heard a helicopter overhead for an extended period and and reported seeing multiple police units. That suspect was ultimately taken into custody.

While this was ongoing, LBPD had to respond to a double shooting at roughly 10:45 p.m. in the 1800 block of Lime Ave...in which one of the victims died. No suspect(s) have been apprehended (yet) on this crime which LBPD is now investigating.

LBREPORT.com has since separately confirmed that in the 1 a.m. hour, a shooting victim walked into a hospital and said he had been shot in the 1400 block of Molino Ave. Officers responded, found no crime scene at that location, but while on scene heard gunfire nearby [!], found a gun in an alley and arrested two men (adults) on unrelated charges. That's under investigating too.

LBPD also responded to what sounded like a possible stabbing -- but wasn't -- in the area of 3rd/Pine shortly before 2 a.m. It was a fight involving multiple parties who were gone by the time police arrived; local security broke up the fight.

All this, within a few hours over the Memorial Day weekend.
