LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Megan Zabel says that at about 11:27 a.m., officers were responding to the area of 14th St./Chestnut Ave. regarding a group of subjects loitering. [Updated, detailed information follows.] Sgt. Zabel says a witness saw the suspect allegedly fire the round in the air, and that information was part of the dispatch call. When the officers arrived in the area, they observed a subject who matched the description the witness gave on the shooting suspect. The officers observed a gun in the suspect's waistband when they went to detain him. Officers responded and located the suspect at Magnolia Avenue and Cowles Street (about a block north and two blocks west) PIO Zabel says officers could see that the suspect allegedly had a gun tucked in his waistband and were able to take the suspect (a male, no age initially indicated) into custody without harm...and the gun was recovered. After the suspect was in custody, officers went to the area where the witness stated the shooting occurred and found evidence LBPD says confirms what the witness said occurred. The bottom line: a successful arrest of an armed suspect -- who'd allegedly fired a gun near two Long Beach public parks -- and was spotted and successfully taken into custody without anyone getting hurt. And LBPD's investigation of the incident is ongoing.
