[LBFD updated text] Fire investigators ruled the fire last night as accidental. The fire appears to have been caused by smoking materials on and around the victims bed. The smoke detectors activated per reports by neighbors that stated they heard the audible alarm. Initial efforts to identify the victim place him in his 50's at the time of death. (May 30, 2017, 6:20 a.m.) -- A man (adult) was found deceased overnight in the aftermath of an apartment fire in the 1500 block of Magnolia Ave. LBPD says firefighters responded at 2:16 a.m. to reports of a fire alarm with smoke; Engine 3 arrived at 2:22 a.m. and reported "nothing showing, investigating"; firefighters entered the second floor at 2:24 a.m., found light smoke from one unit, forced entry to the unit...and encountered heavy, black smoke. "Firefighters initiated fire attack and during primary search operations, they found 1 victim, a confirmed fatality. The individual, an adult male, was found in the bedroom," LBFD says in a release.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze at about 2:30 a.m.; the apartment sustained heavy smoke damage throughout with fire damage noted in the bedroom. LBFD and LBPD are on-scene. No other injuries reported, no other residents displaced. 27 firefighters were on-scene.
