LBPD Arrests, DA Charges Two Suspects, Alleges NLB Murder + Five Counts NLB Shootings/Attempted Murder + Gang Enhancements + Weapons + Drug Charges


(Nov. 26, 2014) -- LBPD has arrested, and the L.A. County District Attorney's office has filed charges against, Carlos Alexis Escalante, 18, of Long Beach and Ricardo Gonzalez, 19, of West Covina, alleging murder in connection with the fatal May 26, 2014 shooting of Enrique Lopez in the 2800 block of E. 68th St., and attempted murder as four other people were standing nearby, plus an alleged attempted murder in an Oct. 23, 2014 shooting in the area of Artesia Blvd/Atlantic Ave., with gang enhancements plus weapons and drug charges.

In a release (text below), LBPD says both incidents are believed to tbe gang related, and LBPD Homicide Detectives in collaboration with Gang Investigations Detectives brought the case to the D.A.'s office, which on Nov. 25 filed chargesw alleging one count of murder; five counts of attempted murder plus gang enhancements, weapons violations and possession of drugs with intent to distribute.

[LBPD release text] On Friday, November 21, 2014, Long Beach Police arrested 19-year old Ricardo Gonzalez of West Covina and 18-year-old Carlos Alexis Escalante of Long Beach in connection with two shootings in North Long Beach. Officers stopped Gonzalez and Escalante when they were driving in a vehicle together. During a search of the vehicle, officers found a quantity of drugs and a gun, which led to additional drugs and weapons charges.

Detectives believe the two are responsible for the May 26, 2014, murder of Enrique Lopez in the 2800 block of E. 65th Street and the attempted murder of four additional individuals who were standing near the victim when the shooting occurred. The suspects were also charged with attempted murder for their involvement in a shooting that occurred on October 23, 2014, in the area of Artesia Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue. Both incidents are believed to be gang related.

Long Beach Homicide Detectives in collaboration with Gang Investigations Section Detectives presented their cases to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. On November 25, 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney filed the following charges against both suspects:

  • One count of murder
  • Five counts of attempted murder
  • Gang enhancements
  • Weapons violations
  • Possession of drugs with intent to distribute

Gonzalez and Escalante are being held at Los Angeles County Jail.
