(Nov. 12, 2015) -- A "GoFundMe" page has been set up by a cousin to cover funeral expenses for Jeffrey Keo, 26, who police emphasized was NOT a gang member but was shot to death on Nov. 10 in the area of 14th St./Gundry Ave. The page indicates that as of early afternoon Nov. 12, $6,575 had been contributed by 180 people (after $5,000 was sought.) An accompanying message states: "A beloved family and friend to many, Jeffery Keo's life was taken by a drive by shooting on November 10th located near 14th and Gundry in Long Beach, CA. Our goal is to raise money for Jeffery's funeral services and any donation from his family, friends, or colleagues will be greatly appreciated." The GoFundMe page is at this link. Mr. Keo was Long Beach's third murder victim within the preceding 30 days; two of those homicides were in the 6th Council district with one in the 8th.
A little over 24 hours after Mr. Keo was fatally shot, LB had a shooting (no hit) in the midnight hour (Nov. 12) about two miles away (west/northwest, also in the 6th Council district.) By our unofficial count, that makes at least 18 shootings (fatal, non-fatal and "no hit") within the past 30 days to date, concentrated within a relatively small portion of Long Beach.
LB's 3, 5, 7 and 9th Council districts had no shootings within the past 30 days...and the 3rd and 5th districts no shootings for the entire year to date. On Oct. 13, 6th dist. Councilman Dee Andrews was the lead agendizer, joined by Councilwoman Gonzalez (1st dist.), Vice Mayor Lowenthal (2nd dist.) and Councilman Supernaw (4th dist.) in proposing to create a "Dog Walker Watch" program in which volunteers walking their dogs would be trained to be observant and report suspicious activity. (On Oct. 13, the Council voted 9-0 to send the proposal to its Housing and Neighborhoods Committee, chaired by Councilman Andrews.) (LBREPORT.com coverage here.) On Sept. 22, the City Council's Public Safety Committee (Price, Supernaw, Austin) heard an LBPD report on shootings but made no recommendations and didn't refer the matter to the full City Council. On Sept 15 and 22, the Council voted (without dissent) for a FY16 budget, recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia, that failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit and leaves LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what L.A. would have if L.A.'s Mayor and Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers. As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, following Mr. Keo's (Nov. 10) shooting, LBPD officers made an intense search (including SWAT), worked through the night, detained a juvenile whom LBPD identified as a suspect and booked him on suspicion of murder (with alleged gang enhancement.) The case is expected to be presented to the D.A. (which makes the case filing decision) in the coming days.
