State Senate Candidate (Current Assemblywoman) Bonnie Lowenthal To Face Challenge From Fellow Dem Assemblymember Ricardo Lara

(Oct. 19, 2011, text most recently updated Oct. 24) -- Assemblywoman (and former LB Vice Mayor/Councilwoman) Bonnie Lowenthal will face a challenge in her state Senate run from a fellow-Dem Assemblyman.

Assemblyman Ricardo Lara (D., South Gate), now in his first term in office, has announced that he's entering the race for the newly drawn 33rd state Senate district.

More than half of the reconfigured district is in Long Beach, but it's now more north-south (map right, LB details in add'l maps below)...and in an Oct. 18 release, Assemblyman Lara announced the endorsement of Mayors of Huntington Park, Lynwood, South Gate, Bell Gardens and Paramount.

For her part, on Oct. 7 state Senate candidate Lowenthal's campaign announced the endorsements of state Senator Gil Cedillo (D., Los Angeles) -- author of the CA "Dream Act" (enables state taxpayer financial aid for undocumented college students) and various drivers license bills -- along with former Assemblyman Hector de la Torre (D., South Gate) and state Senator Ron Calderon (D., Montebello).

But minutes after the Lowenthal campaign issued its release, state Sen. Calderon -- who is Vice Chair of the CA Latino Caucus (and whose older brother, Charles Calderon, served in the state Senate and now serves in the Assembly) -- told AroundtheCapitol.com that he's not endorsing Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal's state Senate bid at this time.

"The redistricting process has significantly transformed the demographics and politics of many legislative districts. Until I have a clearer picture of the potential field of candidates, I am not making an endorsement in the newly drawn 33rd State Senate district. I have served with Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal and think highly of her, but I am not endorsing her campaign for State Senate at this time," Sen. Calderon told AroundtheCapitol.com.

Lowenthal's state Senate campaign, which notes it has raised over $500,000 so far this year, also cites the endorsements of state Senator Alan Lowenthal, Senator Betty Karnette (ret.), South Gate Concilmembers Henry Gonzalez and Gil Hurtado, South Gate Vice Mayor Bill DeWitt, Assemblymember Chuck Calderon, Lynwood Mayor Pro Tem Jim Morton, Signal Hill Mayor Larry Forester, the L.A. County Professional Peace Officers Assn. among others. (For the campaign's list of endorsers, click here.)

Lowenthal's state Senate campaign website lists endorsements by Long Beach Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal and Councilmembers Steve Neal and Gerrie Schipske...but not listed as of Oct. 19 at 8:00 a.m. is Long Beach Councilman Robert Garcia...who has stressed his Latino ties with a "Latin American Parade" and a Council motion supporting Sen. Cedillo's CA "Dream Act."

Councilman Garcia, who previously headed the LB Young Republicans when he worked for Repub then-Councilman Frank Colonna, moved from the 3rd district into the 1st district, re-registered as a Dem and succeeded Bonnie Lowenthal in the 1st district Council seat (in a winner-take-all special election whose largest contributions came from zip 90803).

Then-Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga challenged Bonnie Lowenthal in the 2008 Assembly race...and is also invisible among endorsers of Lowenthal's state Senate run.

Below are the LB-portions of the newly drawn state Senate district.

Two Long Beach Councilmembers -- Gerrie Schipske and Patrick O'Donnell -- announced their candidacies for the LB Assembly seat after Assemblywoman Lowenthal announced she would seek a four-year state Senate seat instead of another two-year Assembly term.
