Long Beach Police Learn Of, Respond To And With Visible Presence Deter Large Juvenile Group From Any "Bash Mob" Activity Saturday Night

Most leave before 10 p.m. curfew; about 15 who don't are arrested, turned over to parents/guardians

(Oct. 6, 2013, 11:06 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that Long Beach police officers got wind of, responded to and -- with a visible police presence -- deterred a group that had grown to about 70 juveniles from committing any crimes or possible "bash mob" activities last night (Oct. 5). Most of the group left by the 10 p.m. curfew; those who didn't were arrested, held for pickup by parents/guardians...and there was no bashing of any businesses or people in downtown Long Beach last night.

LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Aaron Eaton tells LBREPORT.com that on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5) officers received information of a possible "bash mob" to occur. West Division officers monitored the downtown area and at about 5:00 p.m. noticed a small group forming.

Sgt. Eaton says that by about 8:30 p.m., the group had grown to about 70 juveniles who walked around the Pike and Aquarium and at one point talk was allegedly heard about committing a crime at a local business. Sgt. Eaton says LBPD officers and Pike security maintained a visible presence in the area and the group was ultimately discouraged from committing any crimes

Most of the group decided to leave the downtown area prior to the 10:00 p.m. curfew; about 15 who chose to remain were arrested, taken to LBPD's juvenile division and released to their parents/guardians.

Sgt. Eaton reiterated LBPD's previously stated stance that while it supports everyone's right to free speech and assembly, it will also protect the safety of victims targeted by "bash mobs"...and will use technology to help identify and arrest those who choose to act irresponsibly.

LBPD says that if you "See Something -- Say Something"...and encourages anyone with information about these types of incidents or other criminal activity to call 9-1-1. One can remain anonymous by using www.lacrimestoppers.org.
