LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Megan Zabel says that at about 8:12 p.m., two men (adults) driving in the area of Cherry Ave./South St. were fired from a vehicle behind them. The two men were both hit and transported to a hospital with what are described as "non-life-threatening" wounds. They are reported in stable condition Saturday morning. PIO Zabel says a motive for the shooting is unknown. LBPD's gang unit has responded. There are no suspects currently in custody. LBPD's investigation is ongoing. [LBREPORT.com note and comment: On September 2 and 9, 2014 the City Council voted without dissent to approve a FY15 budget recommended by Mayor Garcia that ended funding for LBPD's former 22-member field anti-gang unit. Mayor Foster proposed ending the the field anti-gang in his Aug. 2012 (FY13) proposed budget; the Council instead cut the field anti-gang unit in half in Sept. 2012 using "one time funding." In Sept. 2013 (FY14), the Council quietly let the field anti-gang unit shrink to single digits (taken from patrol) and in Sept. 2014 (FY15 budget) eliminated the field anti-gang unit entirely. An internal LBPD gang unit remains. blog comments powered by Disqus
