In a release today, the L.A. County DA's office states:

[L.A. DA office release] One count of capital murder was filed today [Oct. 20] against a Long Beach man in the death of Cal State Northridge student Abdullah Alkadi, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

...Prosecutors charged Fernandez with one count of murder with the special circumstances of murder during a robbery and murder during a carjacking. The complaint also alleges personal use of a deadly weapon, a knife. Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes with the Major Crimes Division is prosecuting the case.

Alkadi and the defendant [allegedly] met through a social media site after Alkadi posted his car for sale, Barnes said. The body of the engineering student, who was last seen near his Northridge home on Sept. 17, was discovered last week near Palm Springs off the 10 Freeway.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery - Homicide Division.

The special circumstance allegations make Fernandez eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek death or life in state prison without the possibility of parole.
