(Oct. 3, 2017, 5:50 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that city staff will modify/adjust the planned format for its Oct. 4 ELB (Whaley Park) "workshop" on its proposed land use changes/increased density to include Town Hall-type public questions and publicly stated city staff responses, as well as providing an opportunity for one-on-one staff-public interactions at information stations.

In resposne to an inquiry by LBREPORT.com, LB Development Services spokesperson Kevin Lee states:

[Kevin Lee, LBDS spokesperson text] The City will be adding more engagement opportunities to the upcoming community workshops.

The workshop stations that were put into place last Saturday, September 30, proved to be valuable as City Staff were able to engage with workshop attendees on a one on one basis. These interactions provided meaningful insights into specific neighborhoods, and allowed staff the opportunity to discuss different topics of the Plan with those that weren’t as comfortable speaking in a large group. Because of this, the workshop stations will continue.

The City will also conduct a short presentation during the upcoming workshops. The presentation will be immediately followed by a question and answer session, where residents can ask questions in front of the larger group. Combined with the opportunity to use comment cards, the workshops will provide several options for attendees to provide comments.

5620 E Atherton St, Long Beach, CA 90815

  • Saturday, October 14, 11-1 PM at Best Western Golden Sails Hotel
6285 Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach, CA 90803

  • Wednesday, October 18, 6-8 PM at Expo Arts Center
4321 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, CA 90807

The format modification comes after the grassroots Council of Neighborhood Organizations (CONO), led by Robert Fox, turned city staff's initial (Sept. 29) workshop (at which staff intended only "information stations") into a de facto Town Hall-type format by basically taking over the meeting and inviting city staff to answer the public's questions publicly [LBREPORT.com coverage here] and CONO indicated on its Facebook that it was prepared to do again if staff didn't modify the format at future meetings.
