Engine Failure: JetBlue Flight Leaves LB But Returns Within Minutes, Passengers Exit On Safe Landing Via Emergency Chutes


(Sept. 19, 2014, 7:01 p.m.) -- A JetBlue Airbus 320 that departed LB Airport bound for Austin, TX on Thursday morning (Sept. 18) had an engine failure shortly after takeoff that sent smoke into the passenger cabin and caused the pilot to swiftly head back to Long Beach Airport, where it made an emergency landing in which passengers and crew had to exit using emergency chutes.

Smoke became visible from its number 2 engine, LBFD Public Information Officer/Firefighter-Paramedic Brian Fisk told LBREPORT.com on the morning of the event.

LBFD responded to the scene. The emergency landing included deployment of emergency evacuation chutes.

JetBlue Flight 1416 had 142 passengers and five crewmembers aboard the Airbus A320. It took off at 9:05 a.m....and returned to make an emergency landing safely at 9:29 a.m.

LBFD PIO Fisk said all passenegrs were triaged at the scene. Four patients had medical complaints. One reported shortness of breath. Three had minor injuries and were treated and released.


A number of social network passenger reports and photos showed the plane's cabin filled with smoke. Among the passengers on board was Twilight Zone Saga actor Jackson Rathbone, who tweeted the following:
