(Sept. 15, 2015) -- An advisory this afternoon (Sept. 15) from 3rd dist. Councilwoman Suzie Price directed to Naples Island area residents offers an initial explanation for flooding in their neighborhood this morning:

[Councilwoman Price email] This morning, one of the L.A. County pump stations at Naples Island did not turn on which has led to severe flooding in the Naples residential area. The pump station itself was flooded and will not be operational today although it has been drained and will be inspected this afternoon by LA County Flood Control electricians to get approval to turn on.

Our office and the City Manager's office are working closely with Public Works staff and the Contractor to get the water pumped out of the impacted areas of the island as soon as possible. The contractor has received two specialty pumps that are currently working to remove the flooded water.

Public Works has closed the impacted streets and alleys as necessary. Please follow signage. The City Manager's Office is not sure why the LA County pump station did not turn on as expected, but they will be working with LA County and Public Works to confirm that this issue is resolved and does not happen again...

Although the reason(s) for this morning's Naples area pump station failure hasn't been determined, the result may be similar to what happened in the ELB Palo Verde/Atherton area in January 2010 when an SCE power outage caused a City of LB pump station to fail to operate...and area street flooding resulted. Again: no cause yet determined for the Naples pump station failure.

Further as we learn it.
