(Sept. 12, 2016, 12:30 a.m.) -- As first flashed with initial information on our front page on Sunday Sept. 11, residents in the neighborhood along PCH between Poly High and LBCC heard gunfire, saw police activity and dealt with blocked streets after an armed robbery brought an LBPD investigation that resulted in six arrests and included two officer-involved shootings.

LBPD says it was investigating an armed robbery earlier that day in the area of PCH/Lemon Ave. when the suspects fled: some on foot, others in a vehicle that crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle. One suspect fled from the vehicle when an officer-involved shooting occurred; that suspect wasn't injured. Another suspect fled on foot and was wounded in a second officer-involved shooting; as of Sunday night, that suspect was in critical condition.

No officers were injured; no suspects are outstanding; and officers located a firearm at the scene.

In its release, LBPD states:

[LBPD release text] On Sunday, September 11, 2016, at approximately 3:21 p.m., Long Beach Police were conducting an investigation related to an armed robbery, in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Lemon Avenue where subsequently an officer involved shooting occurred.

The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

  • Officers were conducting further investigation of an armed robbery which occurred earlier the same day
  • As the officers approached multiple suspects in the parking lot of local businesses, some suspects fled on foot while others fled in a vehicle
  • Officers immediately detained at least one suspect and located a firearm at the scene
  • The fleeing vehicle continued on until it collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle across the street. As one suspect was fleeing from the vehicle, an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was not injured.
  • At the same time, another suspect fled on foot. During the encounter, an officer involved shooting occurred. A male adult suspect sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to a local hospital. The suspect is in critical condition.
  • A containment perimeter was established while officers searched for an outstanding suspect. He was apprehended a block away, a short time later.
  • No suspects are outstanding
  • No officers were injured during the incident

Five male adults, including the hospitalized suspect, and one male juvenile will be booked in connection with the earlier armed robbery. No additional details regarding the robbery are being released at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing. Neither a photo of the firearm or any suspect information is being released at this time.

The Police Department thoroughly reviews all use of force incidents through a rigorous multi-step process that evaluates legal, policy, tactical, and equipment issues. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.
