Pet Food Recall Alert

by C. Miriam Yarden, B.Sc., MS, APDT
LBReport.com Contributing Editor

(Nov. 4, 2010) -- I recently learned via a So. Cal Veterinary Ass'n communication that the Blue Buffalo Company has recalled several dog food products which may contain higher than specified levels of Vitamin D. To view the company's announcement, click here.

The company says it applies to only the following code dates:

ProductBag SizeBest Used By Dates
BLUE Wilderness Chicken (Dog)4.5 lb., 11 lb., 24lb.JUL1211B, JUL1311B, JUL2611Z, JUL2711Z, JUL2811Z
BLUE Basics Salmon (Dog)11 lb., 24 lb.AUG2111B, AUG2211B
BLUE Large Breed Adult Chicken30 lb.SEP 22 11 P, SEP 23 11 P, OCT 26 11 P

Ingesting high levels of Vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, a serious illness that affects the electrolytes in the body and can disrupt normal body function. Symptoms include excessive drinking, excessive urination and often vomiting.

The FDA reported that to date there have been 36 cases nationwide of dogs reported with symptoms consistent with elevated Vitamin D in their systems while eating these specific products. In all cases, the symptoms have subsided upon discontinuing feeding these foods, so far with no apparent long-term health consequences.

Blue Buffalo products are widely distributed in pet specialty stores as well as other retail and wholesale outlets.

Additional information regarding the Blue Buffalo pet food recall can be found at the company’s website and you may call the company for return and reimbursement information at 1(877)523-9114.

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, discontinue the food and call the manufacturer immediately. To be safe, also check with your veterinarian as soon as possible.
