(Oct. 17, 2021, 11:30 a.m.) -- A downtown Long Beach drive by shooting took place in the midnight hour today (Sun. Oct 17) in the 500 block of E. 1st St. (CD 2/Allen) just west of Atlantic Ave.

LBPD PIO Allison Gallagher says a man (adult) was walking in the area when a vehicle approached him, someone in the vehicle began firing shots and the vehicle then fled eastbound on 1st St.

Officers found a building struck by gunfire but no persons were hit. LBPD says a motive is unknown,

In November 2020, then-CD2 candidate Allen outspent and outpolled veteran community advocate/Reform ticket candidate Robert Fox to gain a seat on the City Council. Ms. Allen's election was endorsed by Mayor Garcia, multiple City Hall incumbents and the LB police officers union despite questions over whether Allen resided in OC (which she has denied) and her claim to have sold her downtown ETA advertising agency to a buyer subsequently shown to be bogus by the Beachcomber.

In August 2021, Allen voted for a FY22 budget, recommended by Mayor Garcia, that fails to restore 48 officers defunded by the Council in its Sept. 2020 (FY 21) budget (on top of roughly 200 officers, including LBPD's former field anti-gang unit, defunded by a preivous Council.)

The DTLB drive-by follows two NLB shootings (CD9/Richardson), the most recent of which less than an hour earlier (Oct. 16) was a homicide (3300 block E. Artedia.) Earlier the same day, a man was shot/wounded when when two male subjects (ages unclear) approached him in his parked car in the 400 block of E. Artesia Blvd. and at least one of the subjects opened fire. LBREPORT.com coverage of both NLB shootings here.)
