(Feb. 1, 2014, 8:55 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that a newly formed independent expenditure committee has surfaced in the Long Beach Mayoral race: "Friends of Long Beach, A Committee Supporting Vice Mayor Robert Garcia For Mayor."
The group filed its organizational paperwork and initial campaign contribution report on Jan. 27. It states that it's not controlled by an officeholder or candidate (i.e. meaning it must operate independently of Garcia.)
"Friends of Long Beach's" initial contribution report indicates:
On Jan. 24, Friends of Long Beach received its initial campaign contribution: $5,000 from TMSI, an entity listing a zipcode of 90815. In Jan. 2004, Gary DeLong identified himself as President/CEO of TMSI in contributing $300 to support then-8th dist. Council candidate Terry Jensen. TMSI also gave $1,000 to Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal's 2006 reelection committee (contribution date was Aug. 2006, a few months after her reelection.) TMSI's Manager of Consulting Services, Nadimeh Ayromlou, is listed as having contributed $2,500 to DeLong's 2012 Congressional campaign.
On Jan. 26, "Friends of Long Beach" received $25,000 from "De Anza Building and Maintenance," a northern California firm whose family members contributed to DeLong's 2012 Congressional campaign in which Alan Lowenthal prevailed. [On Jan. 27, as separately reported by LBREPORT.com, Councilman DeLong filed paperwork allowing him to begin raising money for a 2014 rematch in the Long Beach-West Orange County Congressional district.]
On Jan. 26, "Friends of Long Beach" also received a $10,000 contribution from "West Coast Agencies, LLC," listing an address in zipcode 90806.
"Friends of Long Beach" lists its principal officer as George Urch, an Orange County based campaign consultant and publicist with ties to Dems.
The $40,000 raised to date by "Friends of Long Beach" (in addition any additional sums it may subsequently raise) can be used to help elect Garcia as Mayor but can't legally be coordinated or connected with Garcia or his campaign.
