Chicago by the Sea? Long Beach's Independence Day Weekend Shootings Approach, But Don't Reach, Per Capita Level Of Chicago Shootings

(July 8, 2014, 5:45 p.m.) -- Long Beach, California (Los Angeles County's second largest city) didn't reach the level of Independence Day holiday weekend shootings per capita of Chicago, IL...but it approached that level.

Chicago, with a population of roughly 2.7 million, had 82 shootings (in which 16 people died.) The Chicago Tribune reported 82 shootings during 84 hours spanning the Independence Day holiday weekend; the shootings began Thurs. July 3 at about 3:30 p.m.

Long Beach, with a population of roughly 470,000, had 10 shootings in which one person died during the period from roughly 10 p.m. Thurs. July 3 through the midnight hour Monday July 7. On a per capita basis, Long Beach was roughly four shootings short reaching Chicago's shooting level.

Put another way, Chicago had one shooting for roughly every 33,000 residents. while Long Beach had one shooting for roughly every 47,000 residents.

LBREPORT.com is unable to quantify with precision the number of shootings outside the holiday period. LBPD doesn't routinely quantify shootings, which are (for federal reporting purposes) classified among aggravated assaults (a category that includes a number of crimes.) LBPD does provide information about shootings when we learn about them and ask about them.
