17 Yr Old Loses Portions Of His Hand In Fireworks-Related Injury; LBFD Responds To Four Fires (Under Investigation); LBFD Seizes Roughly (Cumulative) 500 Pounds Of Fireworks Between July 1-4; Details Coming

(July 5, 2016, updated 5:15 p.m. from 10:40 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that a 17 year old male lost portions of his hand in a July 4th fireworks-related injury in Central Long Beach.

LBFD PIO Fisk also indicates that between July 1 and July 4, LBFD seized [cumulative number] roughly 500 pounds of fireworks [no details at this point] and wrote one citation [unclear if for "safe and sane" or statewide prohibited items.]

LBFD PIO Fisk says that LB Firefighters responded to four fires that [stress] remain under investigation:

  • July 4, 9:06 p.m...1400 block Gardenia (tree/vegetaaion fire)
  • July 4, 10:08 p.m.: 400 block E. Louise (garage fire)
  • July 4, 11:29 p.m.: 4600 block E. 14th St: Trash fire spreads and becomes a garage fire
  • July 5, 3:53 a.m., 2800 block E. 63rd St., garage fire spreads to two sheds, a parked vehicle and an RV

Reiterating: the above fires remain under investigation...although their probable cause is currently thought to be fireworks [stress investigation continues.]

[Update] In an afternoon release, LBFD stated:

Shortly after 10pm, in the area of 17th Street and Lemon Ave., Long Beach Fire resources responded to reports of a significant traumatic injury caused by fireworks. Arriving units found a 17 year old male patient with portions of his right hand missing after a firework had exploded in his hand. The minor patient was immediately transported by LBFD paramedics to an area trauma hospital in stable condition.
