(June 21, 2012) -- On June 19, the City Council, acting on a consent calendar agendized item with no discussion, certified the results of the June 5 runoff election for the 4th Council district.

Public record precinct totals in that election show incumbent Patrick O'Donnell received over 70% of the ballots cast -- including 85% in some precincts -- in historically lower turnout western portions of the district.

In the initial April 2012 election, each of three candidates received roughly 1/3 of the votes (meaning 2/3 of voters in April voted against incumbent O'Donnell). In June, O'Donnell received between 71% and 86% of ballots cast in western precincts. The June 5 runoff election included candidates for County and state offices and statewide propositions; Watkins endorsed O'Donnell in the week before polling place election day.

In the June 5 runoff, challenger Daryl Supernaw finished first in nearly all of the historically high-turnout areas of Los Altos and eastern parts of the district. O'Donnell won the June 5 runoff by receiving over 70% of the ballots cast in eleven western precincts (a bit over one third of the district's total precincts). In four of those precincts, O'Donnell received over 80% of the ballots cast.

LBReport.com is the only LB news outlet that was present and observed the City Clerk-ordered hand recount of ballots in the April initial election and reported the challenges (allegations) regarding a number of O'Donnell write-in ballots made by the representatives of the Watkins campaign and the LB Area Chamber's Jobs PAC. LBReport.com was the only LB news outlet that reported 4th Council district ballot issues in the June runoff and the only LB news outlet that provided "follow the money" coverage of campaign contributions (candidate and special interest/independent expenditure committees) leading up to the June runoff.
