(August 14. 2005) -- LBPD says the driver of a car they believe ran a red light at PCH/MLK causing a fatal accident allegedly fled on foot...but the new car -- equipped with the "On Star" satellite option that routinely advises authorities of air bag deployment -- summoned the police.
In a written release, LBPD says the 2:30 a.m. Aug. 13 crash involved a 2005 Chevy Silverado (eastbound on PCH) which allegedly ran a red light, striking a 96 Mazda (northbound on MLK), after which the Silverado went on to strike a 94 Lexus stopped in a PCH turn lane.
"The driver of the Silverado fled the area on foot and is being sought for felony hit and run charges. The suspect/driver is described as a 33-year-old Hispanic male, medium build, with a white shirt and blue pants," says LBPD in a written release.
The driver of the Lexus was transported to a local area hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries; the driver of the Mazda was transported to the hospital where he died from injuries sustained in the accident (identify withheld pending notification of next of kin.)
The investigation is ongoing and any witnesses are asked to contact Detective Dave Lauro of LBPD's Accident Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7358.
