JetBlue Names New Member To Its Board of Directors Who's An Exec With HNTB, Firm That Advised 133,000 sq. ft. LB Airport Terminal Area Expansion Project

(August 31, 2005) -- JetBlue Airways has named to its Board of Directors Angela Gittens, Vice President of Airport Business Services at HNTB Corporation...a firm that builds major public works projects -- including airports -- which LB Airport management retained to offer its advice on the size of a proposed LB Airport terminal area expansion project.

JetBlue holds the largest number of large aircraft passenger flight slots at LB Airport. LBReport.com posts an extended portion of the company's press release below...which makes no reference to the following.

In September 2003, LB Airport management issued a Notice of Preparation for an EIR for expansion of LB Airport's permanent terminal area facilities totaling roughly 93,500 sq. ft. In October and December 2003, the Council delayed a decision on the EIR's scope until effectively after spring 2004 Council elections by referring the issue first for non-binding input from a Mayor chosen, Council-approved "Airport Advisory Commission."

Airport management used the intervening period to direct HNTB to recommend sizing for the project (citing new aircraft configurations, higher load factors, etc.) and HNTB recommended a project of over 133,000 sq. ft. A majority of the Airport advisory panel agreed with HNTB's recommendation; a minority dissented.

In early 2005, after elections in which Council districts 4 and 8 replaced their incumbents, the Council directed preparation of an EIR to evaluate projects of up to roughly 103,000 sq. ft. Several Councilmembers cited the need to preserve LB Airport's non-LAX sizing that many travelers cite as a plus. While not its preferred sizing, Airport management said the 103,000 sq. ft. sizing is plausible...and it is larger than what Airport management originally proposed. However, it is not as large as HNTB recommended and some Airport interests firms including JetBlue desired. The major portion of the difference is in proposed concession areas.

LBReport.com posts the pertinent portion of a JetBlue release below:

JetBlue Airways Corporation today [August 18] announced that its Board of Directors elected Angela Gittens on August 15, 2005 as a Director, effective September 30, 2005.

"We are thrilled to have Angela Gittens join the JetBlue Board of Directors," said David Neeleman, Chairman and CEO, JetBlue Airways. "She has superb credentials and a wealth of aviation experience. She has successfully developed several major airports into customer-friendly, operationally sound and profitable enterprises, and we are fortunate to have the benefit of her counsel as we grow JetBlue."

Ms. Gittens is Vice President of Airport Business Services at HNTB Corporation, a multidisciplinary firm known for its work in transportation, bridges, aviation, architecture, urban design and planning, environmental engineering, water and construction services. Ms. Gittens has more than 20 years of aviation industry experience, having held senior management positions at several leading airports. She served as director of the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department where she was responsible for the operations of Miami International Airport, three general aviation airports and two training airports. Her prior airport leadership positions include general manager of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International from 1993 to 1998 and deputy director for business and finance at San Francisco International. Ms. Gittens currently serves on the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Management Advisory Committee, the Executive Committee of the National Academy of Science's Transportation Research Board, and the advisory council for the FAA's Automated Environmental Design Tool.

"I am very pleased to join the Board of Directors of JetBlue," Ms. Gittens said. "I have followed JetBlue since its first flight in early 2000 and have been very impressed by its growth, as well as its reputation for providing excellent customer service at an affordable fare. I look forward to being part of the JetBlue team."
