(March 2, 2004, updated March 3) -- A nine year-old boy, crossing Atlantic Ave. at 61st St shortly before 5 p.m. while holding his 15 year-old sister's hand, was struck and killed by a driver who allegedly fled the scene...and was allegedly driving on a suspended license after conviction roughly a year ago for DUI...for which he was on probation.
LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Paul LeBaron says police have a suspect in custody, arrested after an alert citizen allegedly saw him driving erratically and reported this to police.
In a written release, LBPD says the brother and sister were crossing Atlantic Ave. from west to east, holding hands. They crossed the southbound lanes and a car in the northbound number one lane stopped for them. The nine year old boy then entered the number two lane...and was hit by a car. The driver allegedly fled the scene without making an attempt to identify himself or render aid. The boy, identified as Daniel Lopez of LB, was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
LBPD says the suspect driver allegedly left the scene, fled to his home in the 5500 block of California Ave. where he put his car in an enclosed garage. Based on information provided by LBPD by an alert citizen, officers detained the suspect, who they say was identified by a witness as the person who fled the scene of the crime.
Police say the suspect, 41 year-old Stacy Lamont Gibson, was allegedly driving on a suspended license...and LBPD further alleges that roughly a year ago, he was convicted of DUI for which he was on probation at the time of the above events.
PIO Sgt. LeBaron says LBPD detectives will be seeking murder charges in this case.
