News Yes, Sheriff Baca Has Endorsed Two Candidates For LB Mayor & Two For Third District Council
(Feb. 3, 2006) -- Yes, L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca has endorsed two candidates for LB's 3d district Council seat -- Norm Ryan and Gary DeLong -- and two candidates in the LB Mayor's race -- Doug Drummond and Frank Colonna.
Spokesman Jeffrey Prang tells LBReport.com that Sheriff Baca does indeed sometimes offer more than one endorsement in a contested race.
"From working with him, I've seen that he views his endorsement more as akin to saying he believes a candidate or candidates are worthy and would make responsible decisions in office." Sort of like a seal of approval? "Yes, sort of. The Sheriff isn't saying one candidate is better than the other. He's saying he's met with these guys and LB would be well served by them."
Sheriff Baca's endorsement also comes equipped with a no-nonsense endorsement letter, which states in pertinent part:
"To ensure that no misunderstanding occurs regarding the meaning of my support and my name in your campaign materials, the following guidelines must be followed:
1. You may use my name or quotes from me on brochures about you or other positive and educational literature only [emphasis in original] with my specific prior approval.
2. Any use of my name must be cleared by me in advance.
3. Any use of my photograph or likeness must be cleared with me in advance.
4. Under no circumstances may my name, photograph or likeness be used in negative mail, attack mailers, hit pieces or comparison mailers.
5. Any uses of my name, photograph or likeness on radio, television or cable advertisements must be cleared by me in advance
6. You may not use the official Los Angeles County "Sheriff's star" for any campaign purposes.
