(Jan. 30, 2007) -- Another vehicle has gone into the Los Cerritos Channel in the area of Studebaker Rd. @ 7th St.
The single-vehicle accident involving an SUV was first reported on LBReport.com's front page (www.lbreport.com) shortly after it occurred. | Photo credit: Hayley Brandt |
In Tuesday's (Jan. 30, 2007, approx. 1:30 p.m.) accident, LBPD Public Information Officer Jackie Bezart said it appeared that the SUV was exiting the 22 freeway offramp and speed was NOT a factor. PIO Bezart said the SUV did NOT submerge...and the driver (the sole person in the vehicle) was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. (Photo shows vehicle already partially pulled from channel).
In an eerie parallel, the latest accident comes just over a year after a 16 year-old girl was killed (Jan. 2, 2006) when her SUV exited the 22 freeway at 7th St. and in turning left on Studebaker went through the chain link fence fronting the Channel, overturned and submerged.
In the latest accident, the vehicle went only an estimated roughly three feet or so into the water, LBPD PIO Bezart said. An independent area resident separately told LBReport.com that it appeared that the accident happened near low tide. No injuries were reported.
Just weeks ago, KPCC radio (89.3 FM) reporter Adolfo Guzman Lopez filed an eloquent story on the first anniversary of the Jan. 2, 2006 accident at the Channel that took the life of 16 year-old Amanda Carter. To hear Mr. Guzman Lopez's report (archived on KPCC's website), click here.
