Oropeza Calls Schwarzenegger "Girlie Men" Remark A "Slap At All Women"

(July 23, 2004) -- Assemblywoman Jenny Oropeza (D, Carson-LB), one of the highest-ranking women in the Assembly, has taken a verbal shot at Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a remark labelling Democrats opposing his budget resolution plan as "girlie men."

The resulting brouhaha has made national news. Reuters: Schwarzenegger faces row over "girlie-men" insult.

In a July 19 written statement, Assemblyman Oropeza said:

"Our Governor took a slap at lawmakers who didn't agree with him with a comment that was demeaning and sexist. He equated 'girlie' with being weak and ineffectual. This is a slap at all women -- especially the 36 women elected to the 120-member Legislature."
