(June 15, 2005, updated text) -- Gunfire flew in the parking lot of ELB's Veterans Stadium (Clark Ave. @ Conant St.) during Wednesday night's (June 15) Poly High graduation ceremony.
LBPD Public Information Officer Jacqueline Bezart said that at about 8:45 p.m., a fight broke out in the stadium parking lot, which didn't interrupt the graduation ceremony in the adjacent stadium.
Possibly three to four shot were fired. At least one person was hit, possibly a male Black or a male Samoan.
Two handguns and shell casings were recovered, but it was unclear if one or both were fired. A trail of blood was located in the parking area. The victim had not been located as we post (midnight). The shooter(s) is still at large. Hospitals have been alerted to advise police if any gunshot victims arrive.
L.A. media were on scene. Multiple news helicopters and a police unit created a din heard in much of ELB.
Many people who attended graduation ceremony were apparently unaware of what had taken place in the adjoining parking lot. "What happened?" several of them asked us, appearing bewildered by the commotion.
Further to follow as we learn it.
