(June 18, 2007) -- As reported within hours on LBReport.com's front page, the Teachers Ass'n of LB's Representative Council voted (68-1) on June 15 to reinstate the union's Executive Director, Scott McVarish, whom a majority of the union's Board of Directors voted to terminate on June 5.
The orderly meeting at Lakewood's UAW union hall was chaired by TALB 1st VP (and incoming president) Mike Day.
The meeting was conducted by TALB 1st VP Day in the absence of incumbent (and soon to be former after June 30) president Tony Diaz...who (with others boardmembers who terminated McVarish) didn't attend the Representative Council meeting.
Recall petitions against some incumbent Boardmembers were visible in the back of the room.
Mr. McVarish likened his June 5 termination to a Kafkaesque trial.
Several Rep Council members indicated they favored overturning Mr. McVarish's dismissal based on a lack of notice and due process afforded him by the Board's action.
None of the Boardmembers who terminated Mr. McVarish were visible at the Representative Council meeting.
A little over 70 Representative Council members (out of 245 total members) attended. Reinstated Exec. Dir. McVarish said 70-80 members is a common turn-out at meetings of the union's Representative Council.
Mr. McVarish says he'll show up for work on Monday morning.
Efforts by LBReport.com to reach Mr. Diaz for comment were unsuccessful.
