Ouch: Wrigley Area Police Searching For Armed Suspect Encounter Aggressive Pit Bull Dogs; Officer Fires At Dog To Prevent Attack, Hits Other Officer Who's Wounded But Survives; Dogs Unhurt; Suspect At Large

(March 3, 2004) -- An unfortunate set of circumstances occurred in the Wrigley area on March 3 at about 12:45 a.m.:

In a written release, LBPD says two police officers investigating a report of an armed suspect in the area of 25th St. and Maine Ave. encountered two unleashed pit-bull dogs in a yard...who charged at the officers in an aggressive manner.

To prevent an attack, one of the officers fired her handgun at the charging dogs...and one of the bullets struck her partner in the leg.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital and is recovering from his injury.

The suspect was not apprehended and is described as a 17 year-old male Hispanic with a shaved head, wearing a dark colored sweatshirt and riding a bicycle. He was last seen leaving the area on the bike, headed northbound.

(The dogs were unhurt and returned to their owner.)

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call LBPD Homicide Detectives Richard Birdsall or Chris Cardoza at (562) 570-7244.
