(March 21, 2005, updated w/ photo Mar. 22) -- A fatal traffic accident -- involving an 87 year-old driver -- took place on Monday morning March 21 on Spring St. @ Karen Ave. (east of Studebaker Rd.).
LBPD Public Information Officer Israel Ramirez says a preliminary investigation indicates that at about 6:30 a.m., a 1989 Ford Crown Victoria -- driven by 87 year-old LB resident Richard Edwards -- failed to stop at a posted stop sign on southbound Karen Ave. and entered into the intersection with Spring St.
It was in the process of making a left turn (PD says contrary to a "no left turn" sign) when it was broadsided by a Ford Expedition westbound on Spring St., driven by a 39-year old woman. | LBFD Photo: Paul Rodriguez |
PIO Ramirez said the collision was so loud that it brought many people out of their homes.
LBFD responded and used its Jaws of Life to free Mr. Edwards from the wreckage. He did not survive the crash.
The woman driving the Expedition on Spring St. was transported to a hospital with injuries described as minor.
