Tragedy in Bixby Knolls Area: Woman Is Stabbed To Death Near Her Back Door After Officers Alert Her To Suspicious Activity In Neighborhood

    Update: Second suspect in custody

(November 8, 2004, updated Nov. 9, scroll down) -- In a tragic chain of events, a Bixby Knolls area woman was stabbed to death near her back door moments after LBPD alerted her to reports of two men behaving suspiciously in the area.

In a written release, LBPD says officers responded just after 11:00 a.m. on November 8 to the 1100 block of Andrews Dr. (between Carson St. and San Antonio Dr., and between California and Orange Aves.) after an alert neighbor reported two men behaving suspiciously in the alley behind his neighbor's home. Officers secured the area around that house.

    The release continues:

The gate to the neighbor's yard was locked, so the officers were unable to gain access to the yard. They contacted the resident at her front door and advised her of the neighbor's concerns. She told the officers a key was required to open the side gate and offered to get it for them. The resident closed her front door to prevent her dog from running out, while she went to get the key to the gate.

When she failed to return with the key, the officers started calling out for her, but received no response. As the officers were calling for the resident, a police officer that was stationed in the alley radioed he had arrested a suspect who just jumped over the back fence. When the suspect was arrested, officers found on him a knife and some jewelry. Officers, concerned for the resident’s well being, search her home and found the resident just outside of her back door, dead from an apparent stab wound.

The resident/victim was identified as Lynn Schockner, age 50.

Arrested for murder was Nicholas Harvey, 22, of Port Hueneme.

Nov. 9 update: A second suspect is now in custody. He turned himself into the Ventura County Sheriff.

Anyone with additional information about this crime is asked to call Long Beach Homicide Detectives Richard Birdsall or Chris Cardoza at (562) 570-7244.
